FOOD, FARMS AND HEALTH

The Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission envisions a future where profitable farms play an integral role in the health and quality of life of our community. To this end, one of its objectives is to help increase access of fresh, healthy, locally grown foods to underserved markets and low-income communities, in a manner that is sustainable to farmers. SMADC is also committed to combating childhood obesity and improving overall community health through education and enhancing the role of farms in providing good nutrition and exercise.

By opening our area’s farms through the Crop Hop event, encouraging exercise by bicycling, and providing fresh farm foods to participants and low-income communities, SMADC hopes the Crop Hop will serve to raise awareness and bring our region a step further towards a healthier community in which farms continue to play a vital role.
